July 22 1929 - December 16 2015 - Age 86

A graveside service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home for Robert J. Peters, age 86, on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Shafter Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church at 11 a.m.

Surrounded by family, our father, Robert J. Peters, passed quietly and peacefully after a brief illness to his new home with the Lord on December 15, 2015 in Bakersfield. He is survived by his daughter Kendra (Skip) Penner of Shafter, and his son, Clark (Jana) of Bakersfield. Also survived by three grandchildren; Katelyn (Josh) Nuckolls, Korey Penner, and Nicole Peters. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years Arlene in 2005.

Robert was born in Shafter to Jacob J. and Maria (Unruh) Peters on July 22, 1929. Dad attended local schools and graduated from Shafter High in 1947. He graduated from Bakersfield College in 1950. Dad was one of the gentlest men many of us knew. Seldom did we see him lose his temper, and if so not for long. He was also very generous, often insisting on treating for dinners or other family functions. He loved gathering each morning with friends for coffee, doughnuts, and conversation, always willing to help them as needed. Our father was fond of many sports, especially USC football and Dodger baseball. For many years he attended CSUB baseball games with Clark. Many knew his great love of Classical music and opera fostered by sister Rubena. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of composers and their selections. Whenever we called dad you could hear beautiful music in the background. He also had a soft spot for animals and had many pets throughout his lifetime and couldn’t let any go hungry. Dad served in the Korean War in the Army as a military policeman from 1951-1953. Although he did not talk of it often, dad was proud of his service to his country. Dad worked at Mettler’s Potato Shed in the shipping office for over 30 years. Then he went to work for Belridge Packing for another 10 years. He was an excellent shipping manager. They literally hired two men to do dad’s job when he retired. Most of all, dad loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave his life to the Lord in his early 20’s and was privileged to lead his own father to Jesus. Dad was a member and regularly attended the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. From his quiet and gentle example his own children, as well as his grandchildren, learned the importance of Christ in their lives.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, all seven of his siblings and their spouses, and two nieces. He is survived on Arlene’s side by sister-in-law Evelyn Schmidt of Fresno, brothers-in-law Gilbert (Olga) Strauss of Kelowna, British Columbia, and Dennis (Judy) Strauss of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and many nephews and nieces. He will be greatly missed by his family, and those fortunate enough to know him. He was a great example of both a father and friend.
