Cyril (Cy) H Koelzer
January 16 1932 - December 28 2015 - Age 83

Cy was born in Seneca, Kansas and passed in Bakersfield, California. Cy was a shy kid from Kansas who migrated to Bakersfield when he was 7 like many other “dustbowlers” did in the 30’s. He graduated from Bakersfield High School and worked primarily at jobs where he worked with machinery. Cy was a supreme craftsman with all types of machines, and his virtuosity led to a mixture of respect and astonishment by all of his co-workers. The majority of his career was at RLW Equipment. He met the love of his life, Lou Alice Stevens, in the late 50’s and were married 37 years until Lou’s untimely death to cancer in 1995. They had four children and their pride in them knew no boundaries, not so much for their considerable achievements, but in the type of people they became. His love and affection was widespread to his considerably large family, and he lovingly championed the exploits of all his nieces and nephews. Cy was a simple, yet complicated man with an occasional gruff exterior masking a sweet and tenderhearted inside.

Cy was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954 where he was primarily stationed in Germany.

Cy was at his most joyful watching sports (primarily race cars), in the companionship of dogs, laughing at good humor, and benefiting from a generous slot machine. But he was universally known as a man passionate about his Family – his nuclear family, large extended family and his spiritual family at St. Philips Catholic Church.

Cy is preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Gladys Koelzer, his wife, Lou Alice Koelzer (1995), and his siblings, Gerald, and Loren.

He is survived by sisters: Maxine Shade of Sacramento, Norma Newdoll of Grover Beach, and Mary Ann Smith of Bakersfield, his brother Carrol of Bakersfield. His children: Keith (Shauna) Koelzer of San Diego, Craig (Rory) Koelzer of Bakersfield, Karen Batter of San Diego, and Kirsten Koelzer of Bakersfield. Grandchildren: Marquise, Paige, Thomas, Gena, and Ava. Great Grandchildren: Christian.

Special thanks to the professionalism of the Bakersfield Fire Department, along with the extraordinary medical care that Cy received from the Trauma and ICU staffs at Mercy Southwest Hospital, Hoffman Hospice, and Around the Clock Care.
