Mary (Virgie) Avila
April 24 1925 - January 02 2016 - Age 90

Mary "Virgie" Avila passed away peacefully at the age of 90. Born in Centerville, California; she graduated from Dos Palos High School. Virgie married her Navy sweetheart, Norbert, when he returned home from the war in 1946. For the past 56 years, Virgie lived in Modesto.

She was an active member of the Modesto Garden Club and the Tropical Plant Society; she frequently entered prize winning orchids and floral arrangements in local shows. Virgie was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, served as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion. She was a 4-H leader for Wood Colony 4-H Club for over 35 years; she particularly enjoyed teaching floral design. Virgie was also a member of YLI, Cabrillo Civic Club, Stroke Resource Group, as well as SPRSI, UPPEC, UPEC, and MPPA.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Norbert "Bert" Avila. and a daughter, Susan Elaine. She is survived by her daughters, Colette (Mike) Perine, and Shelly (Albert) Coito, as well as grandchildren Elizabeth Perine, Christine Perine, Sara Coito, and Albert Joseph Coito III. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Cotta of Los Banos, CA, and a brother, Manuel Martin of Dos Palos, CA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A rosary and funeral mass is scheduled for Friday, January 8, at 12:00 at the J Street St. Stanislaus Church.
