James W. Wheat, 86, of Enfield, died Monday, February 1, 2016 at home. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 8, 1929, son of the late Robie and Dorothy (Hague) Wheat and had lived in Enfield for 57 years.

He was proud to enlist in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was employed by Combustion Engineering, Windsor, was a self-employed electrician and was the assistant Building Inspector for the town of Enfield. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 80, VFW, AMVETS, Elks Lodge 2222, of Enfield and Shriner’s of Springfield, MA. He enjoyed playing cards, billiards, bowling and golfing at St. Ann’s CC. He was also an avid fan of the UConn Huskies Girls Basketball Team.

He leaves six children, James Wheat Jr. and his wife, Margaret of Enfield, Josephine Barnett and her husband, Lawrence of East Windsor, Dorothy Riach and her husband, John of Gardner, MA, Mary Ann Wheat in North Carolina, Patricia Wheat of Staten, Island, NY and Tina Butler of Tolland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Thomas Wheat and 1 great granddaughter Brooke Wormstedt.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, February 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield. A funeral service to celebrate James’s life on Friday, February 5, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors at Hazardville Cemetery.
