Zelta Faye Akin passed peacefully in her sleep, Saturday morning July 9, 2016. She was born January 17, 1926 in Abilene, Texas to John and Annie Sharp. The family moved to Farmersville, CA in 1940 to find employment. She attended high school at Exeter High School. Due to the need for her to work in the fields, as most migrant families did at the time, she did not graduate from Exeter High School, but went on to earn her GED.

Zelta married the love of her life, Arthur C. Akin, in 1942. She became a very accomplished hairdresser and owned and operated two beauty salons over her 30+ year career, The Beauty Box and The Golden Curl. She also worked as an instructor at Visalia Beauty School and also worked for many years at The House of Beauty on Acequia Street in Visalia.

Zelta enjoyed life to the fullest. She had many friends and many hobbies. She enjoyed cooking and baking, arts and crafts, singing, playing bridge and bunco with friends, travelling and camping. She was always involved in helping others and over her lifetime, fostered children in her home, was an active member of the Visalia Quota Club, Visalia Senior Gleaners, and was also a long-time faithful member of the Court Street Church of Christ in Visalia, where her husband, Art, was an elder.

Zelta was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Arthur Akin, parents John Sharp and Annie (Reeves) Sharp, brothers James Sharp, and Jack Sharp; and sisters Bracie Kelly and Ruth Cokley.

Zelta is survived by her daughter, Shirley Ann McLean of Canyon, Texas; her son, John Clayton Akin and his wife Jane (Lynch) Akin of Visalia, CA; grandsons Eric Ferguson of Visalia, CA; Matthew Ferguson of Belton, Texas; and granddaughter Jill Ferguson-Cerda and her husband Arquilio Cerda Jr. of Visalia, CA. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, John Whetstone Jr., Jedediah Whetstone, Job Whetstone, and Jennie Whetstone, all from Visalia; Kegan Campise of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Ashlynn Cerda of Apple Valley, CA. She is also survived by one sister, Jean McKee of Visalia, CA.

Visitation and viewing will be held Friday, July 15th, from 4pm-8pm at Salser and Dillard funeral home at 127 E. Caldwell Ave in Visalia, CA.

Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, July 16th, at 11am at Visalia Community Church of Christ at 3838 S. Court Street in Visalia, CA.
